5 Black-Owned Food Brands We Love

As mentioned in last week’s post, this month -- to further support Black History Month -- we’re focusing on black-owned businesses. I won’t lie, finding a way to include only five brands for this week’s blog was very difficult (but I’m incredibly excited to share the brands I did land on). This week we’re focusing on black-owned food companies! You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Vote with your wallet.” This expresses how you have the power to uplift companies that share your values, simply through a small purchase. Purchasing items from black-owned entrepreneurs shows your support for these amazing companies. So, follow me while I guide you through five food brands we love!

1. Pipcorn | Snacks

Pipcorn is a family business that started when siblings -- Jen and Jeff Martin -- were moving apartments. Jeff ended up accidentally making the best popcorn they’d ever had, and that’s how the business started. If the name “Pipcorn” sounds familiar, it might be because they pitched the idea on Shark Tank. Since the beginning of the company, Pipcorn has expanded to include more than just popcorn. You can now find Cheese Balls, Corn Dippers and Crackers. Find your next easy snack through Pipcorn!

2. Partake | Cookies

Partake was started by Denise when she discovered there weren’t many healthy and severe-allergy-friendly food options. All of the cookies from Partake are certified gluten-free, vegan and non-gmo verified. They are also free from the top 8 (most common) allergens. If you’re looking for something a little sweet (especially if you have allergies), buy a couple of boxes of cookies and “Partake” in this delicious treat!

3. Sweet Dames | Artisan Confections

Genelle is the owner and baker of Sweet Dames -- a gluten-free company. Sweet Dames is inspired by Genelle’s grandparents; their food seemed to be the center of many fond memories. Her main goal is to “bring joy and fun to people’s lives” through her baked goods. Sweet Dames offers a variety of sweet treats ranging from macaroon bites to chocolate bark. If you’re gluten-free or if you’re shopping for someone that is, Sweet Dames is a great option to find tasty treats.

4. Essie Spice | Spice Blends

Essie Spice was the brainchild of Essie Bartels -- born out of her love of mixing flavors. Essie Spice currently sells four different seasonings: Mango Chili Medley, Tamarind Oh! and Coco-for-Garlic sauces and a dry rub called Mekko Dry Rub. If you’ve been in a bit of a flavor rut, I recommend trying out Essie Spice to add some much needed flavor back into your life. She even has a section of her website dedicated to recipes if you need any inspiration! So, get cookin’ with Essie Spice.

5. Cocoa Belle Chocolates | Chocolate

Carmen started Cocoa Belle Chocolates after traveling to London and learning to make her first chocolate truffle. She obtained a certificate from Ecole Chocolat Professional Chocolate Arts and now sells her beautiful, sweet creations through Cocoa Belle Chocolates. She offers many options including chocolate butters, chocolate sauces and a variety of barks. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, order a chocolatey treat for yourself and/or your loved ones.

Don’t hesitate! Visit these shops to support amazing artists and their wonderful creations.
