Our Favorite Good Causes: 1% for the Planet
For the month of December, we’re celebrating the #cleanwaterparty with a team hydration challenge and fundraising for charity:water. We are grateful for clean water, but 1 in 10 people around the world don’t have this basic need. It’s time to do our part to change this. Donate today.
Planetary Prosperity
If you’re looking to embrace a lifestyle of sustainability, it is vital to focus on environmental and social consciousness. Supporting charities is a great way to promote planetary prosperity. My favorite charities are ones that take on social issues and find ways to positively impact them. Last week, I told you about The Good Camp’s fundraiser for charity: water and this week, we’re focusing on 1% for the Planet, a charity focused on helping to find and fund answers to environmental issues.
The Founding
Did you know that the founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, and the founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, Craig Mathews, started 1% for the Planet? They chose to give 1% of their sales back to the environment-- profitable or not-- and wanted to share this idea with others, creating a global movement. And so, this nonprofit organization’s mission is to bring dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving.
Support the Growth
The 1% for the Planet model works like this:
Businesses donate a minimum of 1% of their annual sales
Individual members give at least 1% of their salary
The money is donated to various environmental global nonprofits approved by the organization
Anyone can donate to 1% for the Planet as a way to support the growth of the movement.
Fundraising
Another option for supporting 1% for the Planet (especially if you do not personally have the funds to donate) is through fundraising. All you need to do is go to this page and you can sign up to create your own fundraising page. It’s really simple to set up and you just share it on social media, email, text, or however you get in contact with people.
By The Numbers
Wondering about the impact?
1% for the Planet has given more than $265 million to environmental nonprofits
that’s a global network of 3,419 businesses and individual members
within 64 countries
Since it was founded in 2002
Better Care
While a lot has been achieved by this organization, more still needs to be done. I mean, if you take a look around, it’s obvious the planet could still use a lot of help. We should be taking better care of the Earth, and you could start that journey by simply supporting charities like 1% for the Planet, or by purchasing from brands like the ones below that support this amazing nonprofit.
