Sustainable Summer: Makeup Essentials

Each week, we’re bringing you our Sustainable Summer Series to highlight the most ethical companies under the sun. This week, we’re focusing on the makeup brands that take the time to craft sustainable and safe makeup for both our skin and the planet. Although the cosmetic industry is progressively getting more ethical in its production and manufacturing, there are still many brands out there that still test on animals, are full of chemicals, are not ethically sourced and are not safe for the environment. Listed below are five brands that strive for sustainability every day in order to help you achieve your daily summer makeup look.

1. Axiology | All-Natural Lipsticks

This brand started out with the mission to create the most ethical lipsticks in the world. Made with hydrating and organic botanical oils, these lipsticks are comparable with the skincare brands that replenish the natural moisture in your lips. These are also made with ethically-sourced mineral pigments, meaning that the lipsticks are obtained using safe and responsible methods for both the workers and the planet. Choose from sheer balms to add subtle color, or transform your lips with a pigmented lipstick like the ones shown above.

2. DAB Herb Makeup & Skincare | Organic Herb Mascara

As a whole, this brand is cruelty-free, organic and vegan. This mascara is also the exact opposite of other commercial mascaras out there. It’s made with concentrated lavender and tea tree oils, ensuring that the thin skin around your eyes is coming into contact with natural ingredients rather than chemical ones. This is not only safer, but revitalizes the skin and lashes to give natural-looking volume while preventing lash breakage and sparseness. Sign us up!

3. Fat and the Moon | Eye Coal

Coming in pot form to be used with your fingers, Fat and the Moon’s Eye Coal is an eyeshadow that was formulated to be rich and light. It features a sunflower oil base that sinks into your skin and keeps you moisturized, with beeswax additives that keeps its shape and prevents any smears. Its Earth-based mineral oxide pigments give it its saturated color, and despite its dark name, this eyeshadow comes in an array of other colors to give you a bright summer look!

4. Bee You Organics | Organic BB Cream

All day sun protection is a must during the summer months. This BB Cream from Bee You Organics is a tinted sunscreen with moisturizer, keeping you covered with its sheer, non-sticky formula. It’s ocean and coral reef safe, organic, gluten-free and made for sensitive skin. The beeswax in it is a natural humectant that locks in moisture and creates a skin barrier from outside irritants, its shea butter is collagen-loaded with Vitamin A and E, its grapeseed is easy on acne-prone skin and its organic cacao powder gives this cream its rich color. Maybe the brand is right—”the more you wear this, the less makeup you’ll need.”

5. Aether Beauty | Supernova Crushed Pure Diamond Highlighter

Our last product in the lineup will give you the glow that any makeup look needs. This pressed powder highlighter is made from organic rosehip and jojoba seed oil to boost collagen and reduce inflammation, and its honeysuckle flower extract improves uneven skin tones with antibacterial properties. Did we mention its actually made from crushed diamonds? This ethically-sourced powder purifies and protects your skin from electromagnetic frequencies, all the while being clean, vegan, cruelty free and gluten-free. If none of this sparked your interest, Aether also donates 1% of sales to 1% for the Planet. What are you waiting for?

Here’s to the brands working hard to ensure sustainability in their products from start to finish. Check them out!
